Clement Soffer came to the U.S. at the age of 15. He had no relatives in the United States and his family was forced to stay in Egypt.
Married to Emma Gottlieb, he and his wife have two married sons and 4 grandchildren. Clem speaks six languages, is a veteran businessman, and most notably an active community leader.
Clem served as the founder and board member of the first Egyptian Synagogue in Brooklyn, was a cabinet member and spokesman of United Jewish Appeal and Israel Bonds of Long Island, and acted as Chairman of the Education Committee.
He was Vice President of the International Sephardic Education Foundation in NY and a Founding Member and President of Chabad of Port Washington.
He was executive Vice President of the Council for the Rescue of Syrian Jews when they rescued the last 4,500 Jews remaining in Syria from the hands of President Hafez El Assad. He was also responsible for removing 100 Torah scrolls from Syria .
Clem was Vice President of Atra Kadisha, an international organization dedicated to protecting Jewish cemeteries from destruction. He was instrumental in saving cemeteries in Ukraine, Portugal, India, Egypt, Germany, and Belarus.
He received a Congressional award for championing international human rights issues which was entered into the congressional record. He received many congratulatory letters from Governor Mario Cuomo, Senators Joseph Lieberman, Charles Schumer, Bob Kestin, Daniel Inoue, and Frank Lautenberg.
He was also honored by Yeshiva University for his dedication to the Jewish People and was a founding member of Beit Edmond Jacob Safra Synagogue in Aventura.
Clem built a chain of 15 ladies boutiques in the metropolitan area of NY and NJ, with sales in excess of 40 million dollars per year. He was founder and CEO of JouJou jeans, a large manufacturer of junior sportswear in the US with sales in excess of 100 million dollars per year.
Now in semi-retirement, he is a realtor & the top producer for Classic Real Estate in the South Florida area.
